How It All Started

A Game That Chose Me: My Love for Baseball as a Female Fan
My love for baseball started when I was around nine years old, at a time when life was simple and options were few. We didn’t have many toys, and television was a rare luxury. But one day, my brother invited me to a game, and that moment quietly changed everything. I didn’t know much about the sport, but I wanted to understand it—wanted to be part of something that brought people joy. So I watched, I learned, and I fell in love.
Baseball became my escape and my connection to the world. I found magic in the rhythm of the game: the wind-up, the pitch, the crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd. It was more than entertainment—it was a lesson in patience, possibility, and excitement. I was hooked.
The New York Mets were my first team, and 1986 was everything. That unforgettable season pulled me in deeper, and though I started as a devoted Mets fan, I eventually found myself rooting for both New York teams. Yes, even the Yankees—though that’s a story for another time. Being a fan of both sparked debates, built bridges, and gave me something to talk about with just about anyone who loved the game.
What baseball gave me went far beyond the field. It helped me come out of my shell, easing the shyness I once carried. I found my voice in conversations about lineups, stats, and World Series hopes. I made friends—real connections—with people who spoke the same baseball language. As a woman, especially in the early years of my fandom, I often felt like I had to “prove” that I belonged. But the love I had for the game never wavered. It wasn’t about validation. It was about passion.
Being a female fan of baseball is powerful. It’s a reminder that love for the game isn’t bound by gender—it’s fueled by heart. Baseball has given me decades of memories, community, and confidence. I’ve grown with it, celebrated through it, and found pieces of myself within its timeless innings.
I didn’t choose baseball. In many ways, it chose me. And I’m forever grateful it did.

I first got into baseball through playing softball at around 12 years old. What hooked me was the strategy behind the game, the camaraderie with teammates, and the thrill of making a great play. Overtime, my interest grew beyond playing – I became fascinated with the sport itself. A few years ago, I set by a personal goal to visit as many baseball stadiums as I could. I’ve come to love the unique history behind each team and the electric energy of the crowd on game day. Baseball has become more than a hobby it’s a lifelong passion.
